MSU Tennis Community Update III

Written by MSU Tennis on 9:13 AM

Busy weekend on campus at Midwestern State during Homecoming. The Men's and Women's Tennis Programs kept busy as well. Saturday, we hosted our 1st MSU Tennis Alumni w/Great Success. It was really exciting to see alumni from as far back 30-40 years ago, along with players that had just graduated. Hopefully, we can double that number next year, and add a few more female alumni. Also, a good crowd came to watch the action as well. Dean Barrett and Michael Mills, along with others, can still play!!!

Both teams also helped with the Boy's and Girl's Club on campus Monday. Looks like the kids are really enjoying themselves, plus getting better. We had at least 30 kids for the event. Next events up for the MSU Tennis Program are Boy's and Girl's Club Nov. 15 at 4:30 PM and an exhibition at Hamilton Park on Nov. 20th. Hopefully you can make it out. Go Mustangs!!!!!

Another terrific effort by the MSU Men's and Women's Tennis Team this past Monday with the Boy's and Girl's Club Clinic. I am a little bias, but the players do a great job of giving back to the kids of Wichita Falls. Even the Staff got out and hit a fews tennis balls. This was our 3rd session of the Fall so far. We have also competed the last two weekends, and continue to get better as a program on both teams. Next up, the MSU Men's Tennis Team travels to Tyler, Texas for a tournament this weekend. Followed by, our 1st ever MSU Tennis Alumni event on Oct. 30th. Hopefully you can make it out the the MSU courts at 2 PM for the event. Go Mustangs!!!!

Another Fantastic Effort in the community this week by the MSU Men's Tennis Team. Would like to thank Bobby Hagerman for allowing us to do our first fundraiser of the year at the Weeks Tennis Center on Tuesday night. We had a good turn-out and were able to raise over $300 for the Tennis Program. Just started with team practices on Thursday and both teams worked hard and got better. Next events for us is helping with the Fantasy of Lights on Saturday and the Boy's and Girl's Club Clinic at 4:30 PM on Monday. Go Mustangs!!

We have had a great week so far. On Monday, we invited the Boy's and Girl's Club of Wichita Falls over for a one hour tennis session with our Men's and Women's Teams on the campus of MSU. The college players did a fantastic job! 30-35 kids were involved in the event from 3 of the local branches. Next Boy's and Girl's Club event will be on Monday, Oct. 4th at 4:30 PM.

The teams also went out to Hamilton Park w/Tennis Pro Johnny Simmons on Tuesday night and worked with 15-20 of his league members. For 1 hour they instructed doubles drills, and for the 2nd hour the community and college players played in a tennis mixer. Great fun was had by all. Next event out in the community will be on Tuesday, Sept. 28 7 PM at the Weeks Tennis Center.

Hello MSU fans...come join us tonight when we play our first home match against OK Panhandle State. I have no idea what this team looks like since they have a new coach and pretty much a new roster, but I have no doubt that it will be an exciting match. We look forward to playing in front of your home crowd. See you this evening. Coach Flo

Well MSU fans...we beat DBU on Tuesday. It was a good win for us especially since they had beaten 3 of our sister schools the weekend before. We were glad to get that one under our belt. We are on the bus now headed for Stepenville to take on 3 regional matches against Southwest Baptist, UTPB, and St. Mary's. We play today at 12:30pm. I will let you know how we do, but I know that we are ready. Look for the live stats. Talk to you soon. -Coach Flo

Hi MSU Fans! We just returned from a long trip to Omaha. It was a great learning experience for this young team. We played well at times and learned a lot about the improvements we need to make. Of course this turnaround needs to be quick since we play at DBU tonight. They have always given us a good match so we look forward to playing there tonight at 7pm. We'll let you know the outcome. Stay tuned...

Mustangs bolster roster with eight transfers for 2010-11

Written by Jeff Rubin on 10:39 AM

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Expectations at Midwestern State were only whetted by the school's first NCAA Division II Elite Eight run last season.

The Mustangs, who reeled off the school's best season with a 31-3 mark in 2009-10, took the first step toward defending their South Central Regional and second-straight Lone Star Conference championships as MSU coach Grant McCasland announced the 2010-11 signing class Friday afternoon.

The class consists of eight transfers including one senior and seven juniors which includes four guards and four forwards.

"This class comes in with a lot of experience," McCasland said. "They've decided on Midwestern because they want to compete for a national championship. They have bought into it as a group and come with that goal in mind."

Guards include Kevin Loyd (Grambling State), Michael Loyd (BYU), Deuce Nichols (Blinn College) and Kavon Rose (Lamar State/TCU), while Thomas Colbert (Northeast (Neb.) CC), Clinton Houston (San Diego), David Terrell (Morehead State) and Darrick Thomas (Wallace State-Hanceville) add to a deep core at the forward position.

The Mustangs return five letter winners from the 2009-10 squad including seniors Chris Hagan, Charlie Logan, Adrian Van Buren and Jon Trilli and junior Melvin Clark.

Midwestern State opens the season against NCAA Division II South Central qualifier Fort Hays State (Kan.) on Friday, Nov. 12 at Bruin Fieldhouse in Bartlesville, Okla. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

The Mustangs face NCAA Division I powers Baylor on Nov. 4 and Purdue on Nov. 9 in exhibition contests on the road.
